The Kilim is the forerunner of the carpet. It has its origin in the Caucasian area. In contrast to knotted carpets the Kilims are flat woven, and have therefore no pile. The Kilim appears in different weave techniques: the simple Kilim, Sumac, Verneh, Zili and Cicim. The patterns are mostly geometrical and arise in regular sequels. Strong and lively colors on dark background are very typical for the Kilims. In the Caucasus, Kilims are in the same way common like the hand-knotted carpets. They serve their creators usually as floor mats, curtains, wall coverings, blankets, travel bags, saddle covers, cradles, cushions, and tablecloths and often as bags.
